Buhari stated that he was writing in line with Section 145 (1) of the 1999
constitution as amended. The letter reads: “In compliance with Section 145 (1)
of the 1999 constitution as amended, I wish to inform the Distinguished Senate
that I will be away n a short medical vacation from 6th-16th of June, 2016, and
while I am away, the Vice President (Osinbajo) will perform the functions of my
office. “Please, accept, as always assurances of my highest esteemed
consideration.” Buhari in the letter to senators did not explain where he was
traveling to for the short medical vacation. The president had last week,
visited the Aso Rock clinic, where he was treated for an ear infection. Meanwhile,
Femi Adesina, the presidential spokesman, had claimed that the president was
hale and healthy, thus casting doubts on the rumours.
But later Buhari’s aide made a
U-turn on June 6 when he accepted that Buhari had an ear infection and would
embark on a 10-day medical vacation.
