Gbaramatu women shut down
Warri-Sapele Road in Warri in Delta state to protest the continued detention of
the students, Accuse the government of wrongfully labeling their sons as
militants
The President Muhammadu Buhari has
been given 7-day ultimatum by Gbaramatu women and the National Association of
Gbaramatu Students (NAGS) to secure the release 10 students arrested by the
military for their alleged membership of the militant group, Niger Delta
Avengers (NDA) or face a massive protest in Abuja.
The aggrieved women and students on
Wednesday, July 13 shut down the Warri-Sapele Road in Warri, Delta state for
several hours to protest the continued detention of the students. The women who
were led by Chief Vero Tangnowei, chanted solidarity songs brandishing placards
with several inscriptions. Some of them read: “This is pure oppression, stop
labeling them as members of NDA,” “Mr. President, Free our sons Now”, “ No
child born to be taken # free our sons”, “ We need them back in school # Free
our students”, “ Mr. President # free our brothers. Time is running out”, they
are not NDA.” Others include: “They are students of Gbaramatu Grammar School
Oporoza” Bring Back our sons alive”, “ #10 boys are still in detention # free
our brothers. They are the future.”
The women accused the government of
wrongfully labelling their sons as militants and demanded their immediate
release. Meanwhile, the Niger Delta Revolutionary Crusaders (NDRC) has said
Rotimi Amaechi, Nigeria’s transport minister, actually recommended the scraping
of the proposed Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Delta state, because of his
hatred for former President Goodluck Jonathan. A statement from the militant
group on Weednesday, July 13 and signed by its spokesperson, WOI Izon-Ebi, said
it was surprised that Amaechi could recommend the scrapping of the only
maritime university to Ijaw land when Ikwerre, Rivers state were the minister
comes from, has three tertiary institutions.
